The Good Shepherd Mission
The Good Shepherd Mission Provides food, clothing, and temporary shelter to indigent locals and transients by:
- Serving two hot meals daily,
- Operating the local food bank,
- Offering two thrift stores for low cost shopping or vouchers for free clothing,
- Making available counseling and referral counseling at no charge preferably by appointment,
- Acting as the Walker County information hub for human services,
- Additionally offering limited prescription and travel-aid vouchers.
The primary objective is to give those in need hope, meeting basic human needs, based upon New Testament teachings of Jesus Christ. This mission was founded by an ecumenical, interdenominational alliance of local ministers, in 1983. Local Church laity serve as Board Members. The individuals are elected by their church. The staff consists of two full time employees, and 10
part time, and about 50 volunteers.
What is our purpose and vision? The Good Shepherd Mission will continue to serve people in need. There is a continued VISION to find better ways to serve.
What are some of our goals for the Good Shepherd Mission?
- Starting a home delivery of groceries to disabled and elderly who lack transportation in rural county areas.
- Efficient transitional housing on our property that is family or child friendly along with counseling areas.
- Expanding our H.O.P.E. House (Healing, Open, Personalized, Environment), 9 month Holistic (MIND/BODY/SOUL) therapeutic program and Celebrate Recovery Meetings which help sober living.
- Enhancing effective communication among Human Services Professionals in Walker County, by building coalitions and alliances, including churches and service clubs. Volunteers provide most of the work, but get many blessings.
